Sometimes the road less traveled is less traveled for a reason. For an extreme example, look no further than Bolivia's North Yungas Road in Bolivia. Accurately nicknamed Death Road, this 40-mile stretch of dirt, gravel, and pavement begins at a nosebleed-inducing elevation of 15,400 feet before descending in dizzying twists and turns.

Most of us will never have cause to travel down North Yungas, and for that we should be thankful. It's easy to see why this is so dangerous. Twisting around a mountainside without a safety railing for much of the time, North Yungas hardly qualifies as a road at certain points — it's more like a hiking trail just barely long enough to accommodate a single vehicle. At least the views are stunning.

Popular among cyclists, the road connects La Paz to (you guessed it) the Yungas region. Rain and fog are common, as are tourists — approximately 25,000 visit it on an annual basis. If you end up being one of them, make sure you drive slowly.
